    Jiu-jitsu for Your Mind

My teacher, Prof. Roberto, used to tell us that jiu-jitsu was one part techniques, one part your athleticism, and one part your mind. I’ve forgotten the percentages… Read more “Jiu-jitsu for Your Mind”

    Are You Confused?

Does life sometimes seem untenable, remarkably embrangling, utterly unwinnable? We felt that way too until Jiu-jitsu cured us of our many peripheral miseries. There is nothing quite like Jiu-jitsu. Jiu-jitsu: it is the answer!
Jiu-jitsu is patient, Jiu-jitsu is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Jiu-jitsu does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

    Jiu-jitsu never fails.

    Where did Brazilian Jiu-jitsu originate?

Brazilian Jiu-jitsu is classical Judo as taught by Judo practitioner and promoter (in the Americas and Europe) Mitsuo "Esai" Maeda in the early half of the 20th century. He was apparently a scrappy little fighter who was sometimes called "count of combat" by friend and foes alike. As a naturalized Brazilian (the Japanese have long been fascinated with and exploitative of the Amazon) Maeda came into contact with and trained many Brazilians including the famous Gracie brothers.   While Judo over the last century has become a throw-focused Olympic tradition BJJ has maintained the more scrappy, ground-based, "street fight" aspect of the art.
